Welcome to the 2004-2005 School Year.

This year at Westlake Middle School the Special Education Department will have a new look about it as your child walks into their classrooms in the 2002-03 school year.  Following a yearlong analysis of the department, we are implementing several important and significant changes.  The rationale behind the changes is to make sure that our Special Education students are achieving an average year’s growth as defined by the school district.

Our efforts will be focusing on an inclusionary model that will enhance the role of the Special Education teacher in the regular education classroom.  Instead of the Special Education student receiving instruction in the regular education classroom and then help or remediation in the Resource Room or Special Education classroom, we will be offering Special Education services within the general education classroom itself.  In cooperation with the regular classroom teacher, our Special Education staff will be providing services within that very classroom at the time the student is there.  It is our goal to make sure that a Special Education Teacher or Para-professional is there at the time when the assignment is given in order to facilitate the lesson, modifications, and completion of the assignment or lesson.

If you have questions or concerns about the impending changes, please make sure that you contact your child’s Special Education Teacher, or Jodie Krayenhagen, Assistant Principal in charge of Student Services.  As always we ask that you maintain regular contact with your Special Education provider during the course of the year.  We are looking for the best educational experience and growth opportunity for your child next year and in the years to come.
